John J. Gredler Works of Art

19th Century Italian Grand Tour Bronze of a Satyr Sculpture, Pompeii

$1,840.00

Call For Location | 203-325-8070

19th century Neapolitan Grand Tour bronze of a Satyr with wine skin, also known as the 'Drunken Satyr'. The cup he would have been holding was lost in the conflagration. The lean, muscular satyr leans back so as to squeeze wine from the wine skin into the he held in his right hand. This is a beautifully cast example, the hair, facial features, and even the feet all rendered realistically. A fine study in male anatomy. Mounted on the original travertine base.

9.5 inches high 6 wide 3.5 deep

The original Roman bronze statue was excavated in 1879 from Casa del Centenario or House of the Centenary. The satyr was found standing on a small tufa base in the middle of the rounded part of the north edge of the pool, facing south.

Now in the collection of The Naples Archaeological Museum. Pompeii. Excavated 1879.

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor chips and wear to the base. The bronze in very fine antique condition with some wear to the patina that only adds to the allure.
