John J. Gredler Works of Art
19th Century Bentwood Thebes Stool with Larkin Company Label
Thebes stool, styled after the stools of ancient Egyptian royalty, made in and exported from England and retailed by Larkin & Company, Buffalo, NY. The laminated bentwood seat is more unusual and rare for a Thebes stool. With the original label affixed to the bottom with the name of the buyer written in ink. The Larkin Soap Manufaturing Co. sold furniture by catalog. This stool was part of its 'Empire Line'. The company's success allowed them to hire Frank Lloyd Wright to design the iconic Larkin Administration Building which stood as a symbol of Larkin prosperity in Buffalo, New York, until the company's demise in the 1940s.
Circa 1890
14 inches high 16.5 wide 16.5 deep.
Wear consistent with age and use. Some lifting of the laminate on the seat.
