19th Century Hand Carved Coquilla Nut Tobacco Box

$495.00

Call For Location | 203-325-8070

1.625" h x 2.5" w x 1.75" d

A wonderfully carved Coquilla nut tobacco or snuff box. Portuguese, first half of the 19th century. The top with a portrait of woman holding a flower with a ribbon in her hair. The front an interesting architectural fantasy of an edifice with columns, also columns on all four corners. Floral decorations on the back and sides. This was clearly a well loved and well used box, showing years of wear over it's surface giving it a wonderful patina. The coquilla nut is the fruit of the Brazilian Palm. The nut was perfect for the carving of small items such as snuff boxes. Brazil was a Portuguese colony from the 16th to 19th centuries.

Circa 1825

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Top left side of lid has a .5 inch chip, see photos. Overall wear from use.
