Note : This pair of bronze lions was originally created by Antonio Canova in 1792 for Pope Clement XIII’s tomb in St. Peter’s, Rome .
Our example is a fine cast Grand tour in Gilt Bronze , late 19th century, both lions on nice red Griotte marble bases . Each lion adopts a different pause, one sleeping, the other vigilant.
Another good example of the pair of lion sculptures is at the Corcoran Gallery of Art entrance in Washington DC.
Wear consistent with age and use. good condition, minor wear consistent with age, minor chips on base.
