Large European Terracotta Sculpture of a Hound with Bronzed Patina
Large European terracotta Sculpture of a hound with bronzed patina. Italy. Circa early 1900’s.
Note : Its considerable size, the animal’s noble bearing and gem studded collar would indicate it was destined as a decorative element of an aristocratic interior. This sculpture shares close stylistic similarities with decoration of the 16th century French Royal Court of Fontainebleau.
Italian sculptors such as Leonardo Da Vinci and Benvenuto Cellini who were called to the French court created various artifacts with similar dogs. see Cellini’s celebrated bronze Nymph of Fontainebleau made in 1543 now exhibited at the Louvre.
