19th Century Italian Grand Tour Bronze Brazier, Ancient Pompeii Original
An Italian Grand Tour bronze tripod brazier, after the ancient Roman original excavated from Pompeii, Neapolitan late 19th century
The brazier modeled after one that was used to heat a Roman bath and a similar one from a brothel. The tripod base foot with three satyrs with one arm extended standing on single legs with paw feet holding the fire pit on their heads. All mounted on a black and rouge marble base. Beautifully cast and chased bronze. The liner of the brazier lifts out.
Also known as athénienne.
Comparative Literature: Claudio Paolini, Il bello `ritrovato', Novara, 1990, p. 28, illustrates the prototype for this 'Pompeiian' bronze athénienne, now in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples.
This model was copied in the late 19th century by the foundry J. Chiurazzi & Fils of Naples. It features as No.155 in their undated late 19th century catalogue and was manufactured in various sizes and with various finishes.
