Chinese Archaistic Bronze Ritual Ram-Form Wine Vessel

$5,800.00

Call For Location | 203-325-8070

12" h x 18" w x 7" d

A wonderful Archaistic lidded wine vessel in the rare form of a ram, the surface decorated with dragons, birds and fish as well as stunning geometric designs, the top with a kui dragon for a handle. In late Shang dynasty style, 13th-11th century BC. Animal-form vessels are the rarest form of Chinese archaic bronze. A vessel like this would have been used during ritual offerings to the ancestors to appease the spirits, and thus to gain good fortune. With a lovely varied verdigis patina over the entire surface. An original of this type recently sold for twenty seven million dollars! You can own this fine later copy for much less.   Circa 1900.

In 'excavated' condition, with encrustation over the surface and a gap of missing bronze in the hindquarters.
