John J. Gredler Works of Art
Pair of Eastlake Burlwood Framed Mirrors with Incised Gilt Decorations
Pair Eastlake burl wood veneered frames with ebonized moldings and etched gilt wood decoration to the corners. The warm patina that only comes from age and use make these a very handsome pair of mirrors with beveled glass. Classic, understated elegance. English. Circa 1880.
The Eastlake movement was a nineteenth-century architectural and household design reform movement, which although started by the British architect and writer Charles Eastlake (1836–1906), was essentially a North American phenomenon. His simplified, more geometric designs were a reaction to the heavy, overstuffed Baroque revival style so prevalent in the Victorian period.
Eastlake book posited that furniture and decor in people's homes should be made by hand or machine workers who took personal pride in their work.
Wear consistent with age and use. Minor nicks and dents expected with pieces this age, only adding character.
