A Japanese Byobu Screen Depicting a Boat Scene with Swallows.
Japanese Byobu Screen. Byobu meaning "Wind Wall" in Japanese are thought to have originated during the Han Dynasty (202 BC – 9 AD, 25–220 AD) in China. They became popular in Japan during the Heian period (794-1185) and evolved into the light weight paper over wood frame that have become so well known in Japanese historic interiors. This screen is painted and gilt on paper, the six-panel screen decorated with a harbor scene with swallows flying above pine trees, with woven silk borders and set into an ebonized frame. Sold with purpose made screen hangers for wall hanging.
