About Jules Leleu
Jules Leleu (1883–1961) established his Paris workshop in the early 1920s and quickly became one of the premier ensembliers of the Art Deco period. Unlike contemporaries who favored lacquer and exotic materials, Leleu worked principally in fine French woods — mahogany, walnut, rosewood — with restrained gilt-bronze mounts that gave his furniture an air of enduring elegance over fashionable novelty.
His clients included the French state, the Élysée Palace, and numerous ocean liner commissions, including the celebrated Normandie. Leleu's work bridges the high Art Deco moment of the 1920s and the more restrained modernism of the postwar years, making his pieces among the most versatile of the era for contemporary interiors.
Examples of Leleu's furniture are held in major museum collections including the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
