18th Century Austrian Baroque Carved Figure of a Beggar Musician

$1,950.00

Call For Location | 203-325-8070

Carved bone and walnut figure of a beggar with a very expressive face holding a flute, with a satchel over his shoulder carved from wood with a leather strap. With inset glass eyes. On an integrally carved walnut base. Workshop of Simon Troger (1683-1768), mid 18th century, Austrian.    Circa 1750.

Under the patronage of the Bavarian Elector, Maximilian III Joseph, Troger carved many figurines and groups in a style that would become known as "Troger figures." Troger integrated the use of wood to clothe his figures. He also used other materials such as metal, glass eyes, leather and textured surfaces to create a sense of fantasy that was indicative of the drama and theatricality of the Baroque period.
