A beautiful late 18th or early 19th century example of 'Marqueterie de Paille', or straw marquetry, work box. The top inlaid with a vase and flowers, the interior retaining the vibrant original coloring, showing a building with towers flanked by two pansy like flowers. These all lift up to reveal small drawers, needle cushions etc., every surface decorated with exquisite and colorful inlay. Provenance: The Collections of Principessa Ismene Chigi Della Rovere.
The technique is close to wood marquetry. In the 17th century clergymen, sailors and convicts practiced it, and it gave birth to a very rich handicraft especially in France.
The straw used is rye straw cultivated and harvested in Burgundy. The straw is dried and dyed then opened and flattened in the workshop. It has a natural silica polish that makes it impermeable and resistant.
Circa 1790 - 1810
