French Aubusson verdure tapestry cartoon, gouache on paper, in a gorgeous gilded wood frame. Tapestry cartoons are the life size models from which tapestries are woven. The wools and silks were died to match the painting and the weaver copied it. The quality of the finished tapestry depended upon the artistry of the painter combined with the skill of the weaver.
