Fontainebleau Fine Art
A Group of Three Collage Models by Jean Legros ( French, 1917-1981)
LEGROS, Jean
French (1917-1981)
A Group of three collage models:
- “Symbol Series” Model – 1974
Custom-made, hand-crafted white wooden box frames.
Certificates of authenticity from the artist’s wife, Micheline Legros, who inventoried her husband’s body of work.
Those models, or “maquettes” in French, epitomize Legros’ lifelong research on purely geometric colored abstraction.
Each of them is the small version of a final unique project meant to be realized in a very large scale.
By the time he created them, the artist had reached full maturity, in close proximity with some American abstract artists.
Legros’ numerous essays and writing about his theory on colors shed light on the meaning and emotional power of each one, as well as their mutual interactions.
"The colors, sometimes static or sometimes dynamic, which unify or, on the contrary, slide and collide with each others are “brought to light” " according to his own expression.
The lines and compositions of those models are also structured according to Malevich's Suprematistic principles.
Provenance:
The artist’s studio thence by descent.
