Alexandr Sacha GARBELL (Latvian, 1903 –1970, active in France from 1923) " View of a Dockside from Northern Paris" Signed and dated Garbell 62 lower left Oil on canvas – Excellent condition Beautiful original, custom-made, handcrafted Spanish style, gilded and patinated frame School of Paris painter Alexandre Garbell (1903-1970) painted this scene of a child at dockside in 1968. Born in Riga, Garbell moved to Paris in 1923; his first solo exhibitions were with Galerie Carmine and Galerie Fabre et Benezit. Garbell also showed regularly at Galerie Jeanne Castel and Mouradian & Valloton in the years before WWII. He also participated in the major Salons such as the Salon Des Sur Indépendants, Salon des Tuileries, and Salon d'Automne. Russian-born, School of Paris painter Alexandre Garbell moved to Paris in 1923.painted this picture of a French dockside crowd. In addition to participating in all the major Salons, School of Paris painter Garbell has solo shows at Galerie Art Vivant and Galeries Kriegel (Paris), David Findlay Gallery (New York), Galerie Betties Thommen (Basel) and Galeried'Eendt (Copenhagen.) The provenance of this piece is Galerie Framond (Paris) who--as well as Galerie Charpentier (Paris)--mounted a retrospective of his work in 1970--the year of his death.
