Alexandre JACOB

(French, 1876-1972)

A River Landscape with barges

Circa 1890

Signed A. Jacob lower

Oil on panel Excellent condition

Beautiful custom-made, hand-crafted, patinated frame from the renowned Parisian framing house “RG” Rue Bonaparte

Jacob received his formal training at the “Académie des Beaux- Arts de Paris” under the tutelage of Eugene Claude. He participated at the highly regarded Paris Salon from 1899 to1950, he was appointed a member in 1902 and won a number of medals and prizes; Mention of Honor in 1908, Gold Medal in 1914, Gold Medal for the 1937 World Fair…

Alexandre Jacob and the very famous Parisian artist Edouard Cortes were best friends and members of The Fine Arts Union of Lagny, the artist’s birthplace. Created in 1926, this group included fellow artists: Paul-Emile Colin, Henri Lebasque and Elie Pavil. Jacob and Cortes often joined each other on numerous painting excursions. In fact, at the estate sale of Cortes’ daughter, there were two or three paintings in the sale which had a Cortes on one side and a Jacob on the other.

Jacob’s reputation gained critical acclaim for his atmospheric luminous landscapes rendered in the most melancholic hours of dawn or dusk. His work had a rare authenticity and genius that only comes from acute love and understanding of light, air and their relationship to nature. That level of understanding came from constant observations that he magically expressed onto his paintings.

The artist takes us to places off the beaten track, from the banks of the Seine into small French villages that surround Lagny, where he refreshes us with the quietness of his pictures.

Personal exhibitions of the artist work have been held in private galleries worldwide.
