Desk Designed by Serge Chermayeff for the BBC offices

76 1/2" Wide X 36" Deep X 30" High

      The desk was designed for the Broadcasting House in Manchester designed by Raymond McGrath somewhere between 1930 and 1936.    McGrath organized other designers for the interior, those being Wells Coates and Serge Chermayeff.
     The design is attributed to Serge Chermayeff based on De La Warr Pavilion as well as their site which states "Serge Chermayeff had lived in England since he was a young boy and had an established design practice responsible for the interior of the BBC‘s new Broadcasting House and the Cambridge Theatre".      

   Chermayeff moved to the United States at the beginning of the war to teach.  Several positions later Chermayeff served as a professor and chair of the architecture department at the  Harvard Graduate School of Design, (1953-1962).    By repute a architect who also taught at Harvard commissioned Chermayeff to have this desk made for him.   The desk was purchased from the estate sale of his widow.

  Serge was also father to the accomplished graphic designers Ivan and Peter Chermayeff.
