Festivo Candlestick designed by Timo Sarpaneva for Iittala, Finland Designed 1966; introduced 1967.
The form began as a by-product: Sarpaneva was working on an oversized wine glass meant to hold a full bottle, and recognized that its thick sculptural foot stood on its own as a candle holder. Iittala introduced it in 1967, and it has remained in production since. Authentic vintage examples are signed "TS" on the unfinished base.
A columnar clear-glass candlestick built from stacked, projecting rings, the textured surface breaking the light so the glass reads as melting or fractured ice. The column rises from a wide flared circular base and is drilled to hold a standard tapered candle. The series ran in eight heights, from a single ring to eight stacked rings.
