Kars was born Jiri Karpeles to Jewish parents of German origin just outside of Prague, Czechoslovakia. Taking a very early interest in drawing, he received art tutoring and frequented a certain Lheman painting gallery at the end of his school days.åÊ He never missed to attend the Salons of Prague.

Between 1900 and 1905, Kars was in Munich, where he studied painting at the Academy and the History of Art at the University. Then he travelled via Prague to settle in Madrid where he met Juan Gris and absorbed the painting style of Velasquez and Goya. Finally, he settled in Paris in 1908.

Prior to his move to Paris his work was impressionistic in style, but while in Paris, Kars was mainly influenced by Cubism and his work became rather analytical. George Kars was a noted painter of the School of Paris, and part of the circle of Montparnasse.åÊ He was a colleague of Chagall, Paul Klee, Juan Gris, Pascin and Maurice Utrillo. He did drawings, pastels, and oil paintings with traditional themes: landscapes, cityscapes, still-life compositions, nudes and portraits. His style evolved towards simplicity of form through his contact with Paris and with Cubism, but he remained deeply attached to realism. He used Indian ink, watercolor and pastel in his work.

Kars exhibited his work at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuileries in Paris, the Salon de Grenoble, as well as in Geneva, Amsterdam, London, and Japan.

A personal exhibition of his work was held at the renowned Berthe Weill gallery in Paris in 1931

When the Nazis entered Paris, Kars was away in Lyon, which was not yet occupied, and held two exhibitions there. The paintings he made during this stay are now in the Lyon Art Museum. In December 1942, he crossed the border into Switzerland, and made a large number of drawings and paintings depicting refugees seeking shelter. Even though Kars himself was saved, upon hearing about the dreadful fate of his family in Czechoslovakia, he committed suicide on February 5, 1945.

In November and December 1945, a major exhibition in his memory was held in Paris.

Kars' studio was sold at auction on June 17 1966 in Paris at the Palais Galliera and the renowned collectors Pierre Levy and Oscar Ghez bought a set of important works. The famous gallery owner Katia Granoff defended his work and presented his first retrospective. Another retrospective of Kars' work was held at the Mus̩e d'art Moderne in Troyes (France) in 1983.
