Important George II Console Table

$55,000.00

Call For Location | 203-325-8070

H 32.25 in. x W 53.75 in. x D
Very fine and important George II period console table, circa 1740, the Breccia Capraia marble top over egg and dart carved apron with rosettes in a Greek key border over shell and scroll carved frieze standing on muscular lion legs having beaded acanthus carved knees standing on shaped plinth base with faux marble paint. This table is similar to two designs in William Jones' 1739 publication "The Gentleman's and Builder's Companion" but is also very similar to several tables attributed to James Pascall, including one with very similar half cartouche on the plinth base, interesting in that the present table and the before mentioned Pascall example both anticipate the asymmetrical Rococo or "rocaille" design which was not to be popular in England for another ten years.
