About the Artist

Lorenzo Burchiellaro (1933–2017) was a standout figure in 20th-century Italian furniture design whose vintage mid-century modern creations straddle the line between practical furniture and statement-making sculpture. His wall mirrors, vases, and tables frequently resemble unearthed artifacts, owing to the meticulous craftsmanship for which he is known. Burchiellaro is believed to have studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and the Istituto D’Arte P. Selvatico in Padua, and was a prolific designer from the 1950s through the 1970s, exhibiting at the Venice Biennale and elsewhere. He worked out of his eponymous firm, Studio Burchiellaro, where he enjoyed the freedom to use metals in novel and artistic ways.

Throughout his career, Burchiellaro explored the artistic possibilities of metals, pushing the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship. With meticulous attention to detail, he expertly manipulated materials such as gold, silver, aluminum, zinc, and copper, transforming them into works of art. His functional designs exhibit the same exceptional balance of muscularity and refinement found in his purely sculptural works.
