Oil on Canvas Signed Andr̩e WILDER (French, 1871-1965) La Pointe de La Garde Gu̩rin, Saint-Briac, Brittany Signed A. Wilder lower right Oil on canvas. Excellent condition Born in Paris in 1871, Wilder embarked on a career of landscape painting precisely at a time when this genre was being revolutionized. As a pupil of the academic painter Jean L̩on G̩r̫me, he received an education in historical painting. However, Wilder was encouraged to interpret his teachings and was thus given the freedom to experiment with an Impressionistic style. While influenced by the technique of Monet and Sisley, Wilder was particularly impressed by the style of acclaimed Impressionist artist Maufra upon their introduction in 1895 in Brittany and their painterly aesthetics are most notably comparable. Wilder was particularly fond of this part of Brittany called the Emerald Coast for the color of the water lined by pink sand beaches. Late 19th C, it became a painters' destination which attracted Renoir, Signac and many others. Painted circa 1910, La Pointe de La Garde Gu̩rin reflects Wilder's years of painting outdoors and focuses on Nature for its sole beauty. To depict variation of lights on the water and the rocky coast, the artist incorporated a vibrant Impressionistic technique applying varying tones of pink, red and green. In this work, Wilder captures a fleeting moment of light embodying the ideals of Impressionism: shimmering colors bouncing off the canvas with vitality.
