Oil on Wood by Raphaël Surin Fascinating natural scene. Brightly colored birds, leafy trees and animals intertwine to make a complex composition.

Raphael Surin was one of the earlier painters in Haiti who started to paint in the early 1950’s. Alongside Philome Obin and Andre Normil, these three great artists of the 1950’s inspired the future art of the Haitian culture. Surin was very talented in portraying the scenery of Haiti in more detail than many of the other artists at his time. He loved the animals and birds, the colors, the vegetation. His art centered on these subjects as he captured the beauty of his island.

Haitain Art reflects the lives and beliefs of the wonderful island. Although a country that struggles, the people are positive and creative. They are a gentle kind nation, and the art has a special place in its history.

The naïve school of art is a foundation for many artists who have an eye and sensitivity to their surroundings, but have had little professional training. They may show the flaura and fawna of their life, reflect the voodoo beliefs, show their people, their life in the village and the mountains, and represent the animals of their island life and their African heritage. Early on the island many of the people were not educated, but passed their heritage down from generation to generation through story telling and primitive

art work. The interest in art flourished, and has since grown to be one of the strongest Haitian economies. The Centre d’Art was started in the 1960’s as a collaborative center for creativity.  Art supplies were made available and interested talented artists helped lead the way.

Raphael Surin was one of these early leaders and inspired many younger artists to follow their passion. This particular painting of “Paradise” shows his love for all the animals and plants, with high quality detail.
