Set of Five Small Watercolors by Georges Ricard-Cordingley (French, Lyon 1873-1939)
Five small watercolors divided into three framed groups. "A Triptych of Country scenes at Dusk", "Fishing Boats at Moonlight" and "A sail Boat at Sunset in High Seas" - all circa 1910. The watercolors are on woven paper and framed in custom-made mahogany frames.
Ricard-Cordingley studied at "L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts" and successfully exhibited at the Salons des Artistes Francais in Paris and at the Salons of the Royal Academy in London. He was only 20 years old when Queen Victoria acquired three paintings for her private apartments. Known as the painter of the Sky and the Sea, Ricard-Cordingley had the unique ability to render the most subtle nuances of the fog of the Northern Seas, the reflection of the sun on the Mediterranean and the glistening of the moon on the oceans waves. His works are currently seeing a significant revival and he is the object of numerous publications and exhibitions. They have become very rare on the market since a large part of them was destroyed in 1940 in his studio's fire. He is listed in Benezit, Gerald Schurr and Pierre Miquel. His work is represented at the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Boulonge-sur-Mer in France and in Philadelphia in the United States.
