22 W x 17 H

Signed M Baudet (lower left) Oil on canvas – Excellent condition 83/4 x 13 in 22 x 33 cm 17¾ x 22 in with frame 45 x 56 cm Beautiful original hand-carved wooden French frame Montparnasse-style Marie Baudet exhibited at the avant-garde Salon d’Automne in Paris in 1907 and 1913. A native of Reims, she devoted herself to depict everyday scenes form her birthplace. Unfortunately her career prematurely ended when she was killed during World War I. The few works the artist left us show that she was influenced by the then emerging revolutionary Art- movement from the School of Pont-Aven lead by Paul Gauguin and Paul Serusier. The Synthetism of the forms rendered by broad and flat applications of bright colors are characteristic of that modern style. • Literature: Benezit: Dictionnaire des Peintres, 2006 • Provenance: Estate from Reims, acquired directly from the artist, then by descent through the family.
