Unusual version of the Warwick vase in steel, after the Roman original. Circa 1890.
English Regency Warwick Vase in polished steel. A handsome rendition of the famous Roman original. After it's excavation from Hadrian's Villa in the late 18th century it caused a sensation and copies were made in various sizes and materials. More typically made in cast iron or bronze, this steel example is more unusual. A stunning centerpiece. Decorated with heads of various gods, lion skins and grape vines.
Giovanni Battista Piranesi made two etchings of the vase which were included in his 1778 publication, "Vasi, candelabri, cippi".
