Korean Earthenware Pedestal Vessel with a gray glaze, Three Kingdoms Period, 57 BC - 668 AD The circular body set on a pedestal foot carved with five rectangular apertures, the flared top modeled with incised bands of decoration around the perimeter. A very handsome piece of early ceramic.

The Estate of Ellen Conant Ellen P. Conant was a distinguished Asian Art historian who had a long and successful academic career that included positions at Wellesley College and Mount Holyoke. Her love of Japanese art began when she served with a contingent of nurses in Tokyo and Kyoto from 1947-1951. It was at this time that she joined the Kyoto Folk Art Association and formed lasting friendships and relationships with Japanese potters and craftsmen. When she returned to the United States, she obtained her PhD in Asian Art History at Bryn Mawr College. Her long academic career included authoring an overview of Meiji Art History, Challenging Past and Present: The Metamorphosis of Nineteenth Century Japanese Art, and in 1995 she curated a famous exhibition “Nihonga, Transcending the Past: Japanese-Style Painting 1868-1968” at the St. Louis Art Museum. She also was a long-time visiting scholar at Dartmouth College and Columbia University, and she was an Associate in Research at the Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies at Harvard University.

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. ith some scattered chips, including a few on the mouth, some flaking to the ceramic surface and the glaze; general wear as expected with age.
