Charles REAL (French, 1898-1979) Le Manège du Moulin-Rouge, Paris Signed Charles Réal lower right Oil on board – Excellent condition Beautiful custom-made, hand-crafted, Italian Renaissance style frame from the renowned Parisian framing house “RG” Rue Bonaparte A native of Bordeaux, Charles Réal moved to Paris for the purpose of his art. He was dedicated to the depiction of urban landscapes, urban figures and genre scenes. Réal regularly exhibited at the "avant-garde" "Salon d’Automne" in Paris of which he was a member. From 1903, this salon was created by a group of creative young artists suffering indignity from the tyrannical establishment of the fine art Academy. The Salon d'Automne became a critically acclaimed public display of their frustration and helped establish Paris as the undisputed capital of modern art. Réal was a painter of a wide range of subject matters; he painted scenes from the circus, bars and nightclubs, and nudes. He had a preference for the Montmartre area of Paris. This picturesque neighborhood hosted a colony of hundreds of artists that transformed the history of painting. Réal was drawn like many other artists (the most famous being Picasso), by Paris' low-rent studios and bohemian life-style, and was seeking the innovative and creative artistic freedom which led to the birth of modern art.
